One third of Stuttgart’s “magic triangle” along with Fredi Bobic and Giovane Elber, attacking midfielder Krasimir Balakov is also among the best Bulgarians to play in the Bundesliga. The fourth-most-capped player in his country’s history, Balakov made 92 appearances for Bulgaria.

Balakov was named to the 1994 FIFA World Cup All-Star Team for his part in Bulgaria’s fourth-place finish at the tournament. And impressively, he played at Stuttgart until the age of 37.

Krassimir Balakov has always had a heart for children and their concerns. For more than 20 years he has been involved as a sponsor of the SOS Children’s Villages. In this function, the worldwide enthusiasm for football among children was always a great joy and inspiration for him. Soccer is an extremely versatile sport that offers a wonderful opportunity to experience team spirit and appreciation while playfully strengthening communication and concentration skills. That is why Krassimir Balakov and his team not only support children and young talents between the ages of 6 and 14 in the sporting field.

In addition, the youngsters also internalize values that are of central importance in our society. Of course, the fun must not be neglected. The joy of the game is always in the foreground. The training and holiday camps of the Balakov football school take place in Reutlingen and the surrounding area . Particularly talented young players benefit from the Balakov Elite Team. Here their strengths are developed even more specifically and individually. To this end, we cooperate closely with the football school of VfB Stuttgart.

Balakov, Bulgaria’s manager, also accused England of increasing tension in the build-up to the match after the Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham claimed that Gareth Southgate’s side would walk off the pitch if they are on the receiving end of racist chanting.

In response last week the Bulgarian football union president, Boris Mihaylov, urged Uefa to take action against England, and Balakov – a member of the celebrated side that reached the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup – was similarly dismissive about the potential for any issues.

“What I can say is that I don’t think we have a problem,” he said. “In the Bulgarian championship, we have a lot of players of different ethnicities and skin colour. I don’t think we have as big a problem like, for example, England do. I would like to focus on football because at the end of the day we are all civilised Europeans and we are all working for this sport. That is all that matters.”

Asked to elaborate on his comments about England, Balakov said: “What I meant was that in the Bulgarian championship we’ve not had such problems. While there have been incidents in various levels of English football involving racism, which I consider something normal because it’s a big country with a very diverse population. But we don’t have this problem in Bulgaria, I can assure you of that.”

Uefa has ordered that 5,000 of the 46,340 seats at the Vasil Levski Stadium will remain empty for the game against England, reduced to 3,000 against the Czech Republic a month later. The sanction for “racist behaviour” related to a banner supporting Bulgarian national resistance in Prague and what the Bulgarian press officer described as “a third party chant by a small group of people” during the 3-2 home defeat by Kosovo.

Asked how confident he was that home supporters will behave, Balakov said: “My personal opinion is I can never be certain of what will happen. But I do not think we should continue talking about something that has not even happened yet and to increase the tension in the build-up to the game. You said what you had to say, we replied and said what we had to say and I think we should leave it at that.”

The last time England played in Sofia in 2011, Bulgaria were fined €40,000 after monkey chants were aimed at Ashley Young, Ashley Cole and Theo Walcott, with Harry Kane admitting that the players had discussed how they would respond if there is any repeat on Monday. “There’s obviously a protocol in place but from my point of view and the players’ point of view we’re here to do a job on the football pitch,” he said. “Hopefully we don’t have to cross that bridge.”

Southgate said: “We are guests in another country. I’ve always said we have as many issues in our own country to resolve as anywhere else. We had to prepare our players because of what happened in Montenegro but outside of that we trust the authorities to make sure everything is in place.”

Bulgaria go into the match bottom of Group A having failed to register a victory in their six matches so far but are already assured of a playoff after finishing second in their Nations League group last year.

Balakov, who spent most of his playing career at the German side Stuttgart but also served under Sir Bobby Robson at Sporting Lisbon, took over in May and has lost four of his five matches so far, with the exception being the 0-0 draw against Montenegro in Podgorica on Friday.

The manager admitted he is hoping to take advantage of England’s frailty at the back but was wary of being too positive about their chances of causing an upset after a disastrous display from his own defenders in the 4-0 defeat at Wembley in September.

He said: “Every team has a weak spot and if we can counter the English team’s dynamism and answer it then we will have a chance. In terms of individual and team quality, the difference is extremely big but we have to count on the team’s character and everyone being at their best to get a good result.

“We sincerely hope to exploit those defensive mistakes but we had similar problems in London. Two or three of the goals came from our own mistakes so I can definitely answer your question after tomorrow’s game.”

Balakov has signed a contract until June 30, 2013, with his immediate task to save the club from relegation.

“We are convinced that he can help us in the fight to avoid relegation and beyond. Even in the event of relegation he will be working with the aim of going straight back up,” Kaiserslautern Chairman Stefan Kuntz said, as quoted by DPA.

Balakov replaces Marco Kurz who was sacked Tuesday after a 16-game winless streak. His first game in charge will be at fellow strugglers Freiburg on Saturday.

Former midfield international Balakov, 45, who spent eight years as a player in the Bundesliga at VfB Stuttgart between 1995 and 2003, confirmed earlier he was leaving Croatian side Hajduk Split to take over Kaiserslautern.

“In football, there are no guarantees,” he said. “I took the offer from Kaiserslautern because I believe it can be well, that we can pull out and avoid relegation. It is most important that I quickly take hold of the strings ahead of the match with Freiburg.”

Balakov is known for his key role in the greatest success of Bulgaria’s national football team – the bronze medal from the 1994 World Cup in the USA, where he played alongside other Bulgarian football legends such as Hristo Stoichkov, Lyuboslav Penev, Emil Kostadinov, and Yordan Lechkov.

After playing for Sporting Lisbon, Balakov had quite a successful career in Germany. He played for VfB Stuttgart where he won two UEFA Intertoto Cups (2000 and 2002) and a DFB-Pokal (1997), before retiring in 2003.

Bala, as he is known in Germany, has a total of 92 matches and 16 goals for the Bulgarian national team between 1988 and 2003. For Stuttgart, he has a total of 236 matches and 54 goals between 1995 and 2003.

Before being signed up by Kaiserslautern, the former Bulgaria international was coaching Croatian side Hajduk Split.

Kaiserslautern fired coach Marco Kurz on Tuesday as a result of a winless run that stretches back to October and sees the club languish at the foot of the Bundesliga table, with 20 points from 26 matches.
